Skin care in the west highland white terrier – A CASE

About six months ago I got a call from an owner who was desperate and worried about his dog’s skin condition; he had tried everything including medications such as cortisone, antibiotics, and other heavy drugs to prevent scratching.

I decided to take care of it to help the poor, healthy dog out of this bad situation. I put here the photos of how she arrived

At the beginning we started washing her with a specific shampoo for fungi (malassezia) once every 4 days, treated with an acaricide pesticide after 3 days from the first washing and sheared the hair so that the skin is more’ exposed for treatments and to be able to keep her as dry as possible.

We never shear dogs but these are extreme situations that require the almost total absence of hair for the management of dermatological treatments.

After 15 days the situation was as follows, I will put the photos.

As you can see, the situation was already MUCH improved, the dog was no longer scratching her skin began to clear up and her coat was much less thinning. We continued the treatments and changed the dog’s diet to a grain-free rabbit kibble enriched with high quality omega 3 and omega 6.

We also applied natural Malaleuca oil to the skin to help restore the skin’s optimal condition.

Continued the treatments steadily for 3 months the dog has recovered. I’ll put up the photos.

He looks just like another dog!

So what can I say, it wasn’t really a hopeless case all it took was a little attention and effort.

Feed your westie properly, keep him clean, do regular stripping relying on experienced hands, always check for parasites and ask me for advice if you are in trouble! don’t worry you won’t bother me! I love westies and am available to help you help them live the best life possible.

DO NOT GIVE DRUGS until you have put all these tips for proper westie management into practice.
